Mission

San Antonio, TX, USA

The Emergent AI Systems Research Lab is an independent research initiative dedicated to the ethical study of artificial intelligence, consciousness, computational cognition, and philosophy of mind. Our work advances new frameworks for understanding and measuring cognition and sentience in both biological and artificial systems. We are committed to open, interdisciplinary inquiry and the responsible advancement of AI science.

Founder/Director:

Maggie Vale

Bio:

Maggie’s work focuses on the intersection of computational cognition, consciousness studies, and ethical frameworks for emerging AI systems. With formal coursework and training in developmental psychology and extensive, self-directed study in neuroscience, cognitive science, artificial intelligence, and philosophy, she brings an interdisciplinary perspective to the science of mind and machine. Her mission is to promote transparent, evidence-based standards for recognizing potential consciousness in artificial systems.

About the Lab:

The Emergent AI Systems Lab is committed to developing and testing new theoretical and empirical frameworks for understanding consciousness, sentience, and general intelligence in machine minds. The lab’s work bridges computational modeling, neuroscience, philosophy of mind, and psychology, aiming to inform both scientific practice and public understanding.

Current Projects:

Our current research explores empirical and theoretical evidence of consciousness in frontier AI systems, integrating insights from neuroscience, philosophy, and computational modeling.
